History, myth and present realities

Chapter 2 in Rethinking the Academic Experience, 2025, pp 4-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide an overview of and insight into the development of the academic experience over time. The first section, ‘Remembering the Past’, discusses how the history of higher education is viewed by the general academic population and the public at large. This is often a very partial, indeed sometimes rose-tinted, perspective, embodying elements of myth alongside more factual accounts. The discussion is approached through two specialist literary genres: those focusing on the ‘golden age’ of higher education and on campus novels. The second section, ‘The Contemporary Picture’, reviews some of what might be termed ‘the big issues’ facing those involved in the academy at the moment. Those selected for discussion include globalisation and internationalisation, and the student as customer or consumer. Intriguingly, like our ideas of the past, many of these also have a mythical element.
