Chapter 10 in Elgar Companion to Female Chief Justices in Comparative Perspective, 2026, pp 211-230 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines feminist leadership of administrative tribunals. Administrative tribunals are the “frontline” of systems of administrative justice and play an important role in resolving disputes between citizens and the executive branch. Tribunal leadership is likely to have a significant effect on the delivery of administrative justice. Yet there has been little scholarship to date on what (good) tribunal leadership involves and how it differs from judicial leadership, let alone on feminist tribunal leadership. In this chapter we present findings from our empirical study examining how judicial leadership literature translates to the administrative tribunal context, and the ways in which feminist tribunal leaders shape their organisations and the delivery of administrative justice in their jurisdiction.
