Urban road traffic, public health, and urban quality of life: the case of Iran

Haidar Nadrian and Kamyar Pirehbabi

Chapter 27 in Handbook on Transport in Asia, 2025, pp 543-568 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: As one of the foundations for modern urban life and human social needs, traffic and transport are considered social determinants of public health. Urban road traffic and transportation systems (URTTSs) are also regarded as the factors that play vital roles in the development of the “healthy cities” approach. So URTTSs can be considered two-sided knives that can either harm public health or promote people's well-being and quality of life. In this book chapter, while familiarizing readers with the transportation system and its cultural background in Iran, we will examine the reasons for the existence of traffic problems and their effects on Iranian people's health and quality of life. We will also discuss how URTTSs may affect physical, mental, and social health of people, and how such URTTSs may impact health, welfare, and urban quality of life, focusing on the case study of Iran. The joint role of health and transportation policymakers in making health-oriented decisions for creating health-promoting transportation systems in Iran will be discussed as well.
