Life cycle sustainability assessment

Jana Gerta Backes

Chapter 104 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 388-391 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) enables the assessment of both positive and negative impacts of products and services over their entire life cycle – from resource depletion to the end of product life and re-/down-cycling. The Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment method or framework complements the one-dimensional environmental sustainability assessment (Life Cycle Assessment), with the economic (Life Cycle Costing) and social (Social Life Cycle Assessment) dimensions. The LCSA interprets the results of the three sustainability pillars based on harmonized system boundaries and a single functional unit, not weighting the three individual pillars, and not aggregating the three individual results into one final result. The individual pillars stand on their own, but the full understanding of LCSA is based on all three results and by this shows possible conflicting goals and/or mutually supporting pillars.
