Positive impact

Chapter 124 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 468-470 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Positive impacts are the benefits resulting as a direct or indirect consequence of a product or a service throughout its entire life cycle and contribute to the improvement of human well-being. In the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment perspective, the Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) method is the only one that encompasses positive and negative impacts. Positive social impacts are related to contextual indicators and identifying them requires a cautious analysis of specific circumstances. Addressing positive impacts in S-LCA studies helps to motivate performance beyond mere compliance with laws, international agreements, and certification requirements. Companies should broaden their life cycle strategies to focus not only on avoiding negative impacts but also actively increasing positive ones, therefore contributing to sustainable development.
