Abstract: To measure resource efficiency and the progress towards a circular economy (CE), recycling rates are a widely used CE indicator. Recycling rates should consider both the efficiency of material recovery, including the collection process, and the efficiency of the recycling process. The efficiency of material recovery can be linked to the ease of disassembly or dismantling, as well as to the infrastructure for material collection. The efficiency of the recycling process is linked to the available recycling technologies. Recycling rates play an important role in the end of life (EoL) modelling in life cycle assessment (LCA). They can be considered by using the circular footprint formula (CFF), which is part of the guidance for the product environmental footprint (PEF) developed by the European Commission.
