Social footprint and handprint

Arij Chabrawi

Chapter 149 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 553-555 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The social footprint and handprint are concepts within the Net Positive Framework that entail reducing the negative impacts and increasing the beneficial effects of companies and individuals. Social footprints evaluate the negative social consequences over time, whereas social handprints represent positive effects. Handprint includes accounting for changes that go beyond the scope of the footprints. Handprinting assesses the implications of attempts to bring change in the world, whether at an individual or collective level. The Net Positive framework includes assessing a product's or organization's both footprints and handprints, and it is based on the Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA). Ideally, the handprints should overcome the footprints to give more to the world than take from it.
