Social performance measurement

Davis Jose

Chapter 157 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 583-587 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Social performance refers to how effectively an organization achieves its stated social goals and creates value for the population it aims to reach, which can be measured using various methods such as Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), OECD method, SROI, Mail-out Questionnaire Survey approach, Impact Evaluation and Outcome Measurement, and Corporate Reputation Indicators. The social performance assessment involves evaluating an organization's social performance through the identification and measurement of social issues relevant to the product or service being evaluated. The social performance indicators vary amongst industries depending on the societal impact and business model they employ, and organizations should determine the most pertinent social performance indicators for their sector to ensure they are accomplishing their social objectives and evaluate their performance against them.
