Chapter 175 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 658-659 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The issue of sustainability and its reporting is becoming increasingly important in all areas of human life, especially due to the ongoing climate change. Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) helps assess and understand relevant drivers for emissions, costs, and social aspects. However, some challenges, such as standardization and unification, interpretation, and visualization, still need to be addressed for the daily practice of LCSA. Furthermore, to achieve a wider application of the LCSA framework in product and process development, i.e., especially in practice, the introduction of simplified tools and aids for interpretation and visualization is needed – for which transparency of data, the assessment, tools used, and result interpretation is most important. Without transparency, an assessment, be it one of the individual three pillars or the LCSA, is not comprehensible and thus incomprehensible, and cannot be improved or developed further.
