Abstract: The use stage is, next to raw material acquisition, processing, and production, as well as end of life treatment, one stage in a product life cycle. All life cycle stages are to be included in a Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment. Lack of data, especially about consumer behavior, poses a challenge to address the use stage, which is often treated more superficially compared to other life cycle stages. Product design as well as user behavior are the major drivers that influence the use phase. The impacts within the use phase can be positive or negative. The assessment can reveal options for improvement in sustainability aspects.
