Consistency check

Chapter 19 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 59-62 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The consistency check ensures that the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) and Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA), as well as underlying data and methods are not inherently contradictory. It contributes to the reliability of a study and ensures that accurate conclusions can be drawn from the results of the study. It is one of three key elements of an evaluation of final results in the Interpretation phase of a sustainability assessment, next to the sensitivity check and the completeness check. Among other issues, it covers the check of consistency in data quality, regional and temporal aspects, the system boundary and allocation rules, as well as elements of the impact assessments. To accommodate consistency issues, in most cases, a correction of the inconsistencies is sufficient. If, however, this is not possible, the modelling of scenarios accounting for respective alternatives can solve the issue.
