Corporate sustainability

Peter Saling

Chapter 24 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 78-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Societal engagement, protection of the environment, and producing materials that can be applied safely and support sustainable development are some of the most important elements of companies’ Corporate Sustainability Responsibility (CSR). It is an investment into the shared value for societies, the environment, and business alike. Activities of companies are furthermore bundled in sustainable future topics: health, skills, and resources. Corporate sustainability simultaneously encompasses ecological, societal (social), and economic goals. A strategy of corporate sustainability incorporates long-term and sustainable values into the business strategies. A CSR strategy should cover and address elements of procurement, circular economy, water management, responsible care, and important elements of codes of conducts including human rights, labor, and social standards. CSR supports companies in their strategies, in their reporting, and in their investment strategies focusing on a more sustainable way of producing and selling goods for societies.
