Ecotoxicity potential including terrestrial and marine/aquatic potential

Monu George Varghese

Chapter 53 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 184-189 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This article is aimed at providing a brief description of ecotoxicity in the context of life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA). The article provides a description of the criteria for assessing ecotoxicity and the different kinds of models used for categorising the various impacts, namely fate, exposure, effect, and severity. Additionally, it discusses how the characterisation factor (CF) is determined from the above impacts and its relation to CF. It further discusses the kinds of characterisation methods used for ecotoxicity, especially USEtox, and examines the challenges associated with using various characterisation methods on terrestrial and marine ecotoxicity.
