Abstract:
With increasing awareness of the surpassing of planetary boundaries and the exceeding of Earth's biocapacity, the environmental footprint has gained ever-growing significance. This entry offers a comprehensive understanding of environmental footprints, beginning with a definition and followed by a concise history of its development. The two distinct approaches, namely area-based and non-area-based approaches, for calculating environmental footprints are described and discussed. In addition, a detailed introduction is provided for commonly adopted footprints such as ecological footprint, carbon footprint, and water footprint. Furthermore, other types within the broader family of footprints are also introduced for a comprehensive perspective.
