Externalities

Hashem Amini Toosi

Chapter 75 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 282-284 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the context of a Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), externalities may be described as an activity's direct and indirect environmental effects as well as its imputed positive or negative social impacts imposed on third parties. In order to fully comprehend the related costs, it is crucial to take into account the link and reciprocal impacts between environmental externalities and socioeconomic issues, especially over the long term. There is broad consensus regarding the necessity of providing a thorough understanding of and the inclusion of externalities in life cycle sustainability assessment and the evaluation of the external environmental and social impacts into the assessment of long-term impacts of policies and product design.
