Abstract:
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are substances that have the capability to elevate and retain the temperature of the Earth's surface and the troposphere. As the amount of GHG emissions increases, the warming effect intensifies and contributes to climate change. Therefore, the Kyoto Protocol listed seven GHGs—carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3)—as the main regulated GHG emissions and set their corresponding reduction targets. Among these, the major contributors to global GHG emissions are CO2, CH4, and N2O. When looking at global GHG emissions by sector, the electricity and heat sector has the largest share at 32%, with the majority originating from coal-fired power plants. The Global Warming Potential (GWP) was developed to measure the infrared radiation absorption potential of different GHGs relative to CO2. GWP facilitates GHG inventory compilation and assists policymakers in assessing and comparing emissions reduction opportunities across sectors and gas types.
