Abstract:
Hybrid life cycle assessment (LCA) is a term that describes an approach to modeling the life cycle inventory for a system. The term is derived from the fact that the modeling approach combines process-based LCA with Input–Output LCA (IO-LCA). These approaches are combined to overcome the truncation error issues of process-based modeling and the lack of granular detail in IO-LCA. There are many different technical implementations of hybrid LCA, but they fall into two broad categories: (a) tiered hybrid LCA, which starts with a process-based model of the foreground and uses IO-LCA to fill in gaps in the background and (b) integrated hybrid LCA, which integrates both the process and I-O data in a single matrix framework.
