Chapter 9 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 25-28 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Children are a new category of stakeholders introduced by UNEP 2020. The category of children was added to represent the future generation since the objective is to evaluate the social dimension of sustainability, and this implies that, as the current generation can satisfy its needs, the future generation must also be guaranteed the possibility of satisfying theirs, guaranteeing them the same well-being. Children represent a crucial element for sustainable development. How children are currently influenced by their environment and community will affect the lives of the children in the future. In the latest version of the guidelines, three impact subcategories were presented to evaluate the potential social and socioeconomic impacts affecting this category of stakeholders: (1) education provided in the local community; (2) health issues for children as consumers; (3) children concerns regarding marketing practices.
