Chapter 9 in Research Handbook on Privatisation, 2025, pp 174-192 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
“Privatisation” in health care has a variety of meanings. This chapter firstly outlines some reasons for a “public” role in health and health care. It then distinguishes the two key system functions which might be privatised (funding and provision) and identifies the two key systems criteria for evaluating privatisation (equity and efficiency). We then canvass issues in choices about public and private funding and provision, before considering the international experience and emerging trends.
