Run like the wind: playing soccer with the boys
Madeline Wells
Chapter 12 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 158-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
“Did you hear about the little girl on the boys’ soccer team?” I didn’t just hear about her, I was her. Most of my childhood was spent on soccer fields, gasping for air as I tried to keep up with the boys. However, I should have saved my breath because my body was never built to play with those boys, and females should never have to withstand the sexism received in male-dominated sports.
