The lies we tell: exploring the intersections of gender and Parasport
Staci Mannella
Chapter 13 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 162-165 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
My narrative recounts personal experiences as a Paralympic skier and the ways sport shaped my self-acceptance and relationship with my body. The story considers societal pressures that impact the experiences of women with disabilities in sport and explores my journey through self-doubt, camaraderie with teammates, and interactions with coaches. Ultimately, I highlight the importance of authenticity, self-respect, and advocacy, culminating in a newfound sense of freedom and purpose beyond the sport.
