Chapter 52 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 203-204 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Energy security is a highly contextual and multifaceted subject that covers political, economic, social and environmental spectrums. The concept of energy security can vary significantly depending on the interests and priorities of discussions. Therefore, a clear and unanimous conceptual definition of energy security has yet to be established. Nonetheless, energy availability has been identified as among the most consensual themes of energy security in the research area. Besides, physical availability and accessibility of energy sources, and energy affordability, as well as long-term environmental sustainability are also acknowledged to create conditions for energy security. Empirically, different energy security indices have been constructed to operationalize energy security. These indices share the fundaments of availability, affordability, efficiency and environmental sustainability. Apart from that, more recent indices also consider diversifications in energy supply origins and fuel types as well as geopolitical and socioeconomic factors to form the backbone of energy security.
