Chapter 10 in Handbook of Energy Innovation, 2026, pp 179-201 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter lays out how China has evolved from a latecomer country in research and development and manufacturing to a leading player in the energy technology sector by describing its innovation system through the lens of two cases: the solar photovoltaic and electric vehicle industries. We examine four stages of the development of those industries, namely: research and development and pre-commercialization; early adoption and commercialization; market growth and consolidation; and widespread diffusion and shake-out. We also highlight the role of key innovation resources including technology, market, financial investment and policy at each stage. The chapter concludes with a summary of the distinctive characteristics of China's energy innovation system, which may offer insights to help assess what lessons may or may not be applicable to other countries and other green technologies.
