Introduction to corporate downsizing
Rocki-Lee DeWitt and
Alyson P. House
A chapter in A Concise Guide to Corporate Downsizing, 2025, pp 1-7 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The introduction explains why an updated perspective on corporate downsizing is needed due to evolving multilevel influences on employment reductions, especially digitalization. It briefly describes the process used to obtain contributions and provides brief summaries of each chapter. The summaries evidence the application of a wide array of theoretical frameworks, including rational economic, socio-cognitive, family ownership influences, organizational justice, psychological contracts, as well as social networking. The summaries illustrate how the edited volume offers perspectives on the past, present, and possible future of downsizing inquiry.
