Platform governance in China

Runtian Jing and Zhikai Wang

Chapter 16 in Research Handbook on Corporate Governance in China, 2025, pp 321-337 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces the platform ecosystem as a hybrid governance structure on a continuum between the market and hierarchy. A platform ecosystem fosters complementarity and network effects and facilitates authority control. The chapter provides an overview of China's economic landscape, policy environment, and platform classification. Using case studies of Chinese platform practices, this chapter explains three governance mechanisms that have received considerable attention in platform research: navigating cooperation and competition, managing platform-owned resources, and driving open adaptation. It also highlights topics that warrant more research, including knowledge about cooperation and competition balance in the ecosystem, the sources of authority on the central platform, and the adaptation of the platform ecosystem. Finally, the chapter illustrates platform governance's practical issues in China's current regulatory environment and provides insight into how Chinese regulators can employ policy measures to regulate platform practices.
