Chapter 1 in A Research Agenda for Social Capital in Economic Development, 2025, pp 2-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the complex relationship between social capital and economic development, summarizing key literature and outlining the structure of the book: Research Agenda for Social Capital in Economic Development. It highlights some of the early contributions on social capital and economic development and also acknowledges recent research emphasizing nuanced, context-specific effects of social capital on economic outcomes. The shift from examining direct impacts on growth to understanding transmission mechanisms involving institutions, human capital, finance, and innovation is also discussed. The chapter introduces a large-scale bibliometric analysis as a framework for understanding past research trends and informing future research agendas in the field. The book's subsequent chapters are organized around three key themes: social capital formation, the interplay of social capital, development and inequality, and the role of social capital in socio-economic planning and local development strategies. The bibliometric trends are discussed together with the contributions to this book. Finally, this chapter includes short summaries of each chapter in the book.
