Economies of worth model

Charlotte Cloutier

Chapter 1.9 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 38-41 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The economies of worth is one of the more influential among several conventionalist theories of coordination grouped under the banner of French Pragmatist Sociology. It examines in particular practices of justification, critique, and evaluation in relation to higher order organizing principles that individuals refer to and call upon to resolve mundane disputes in situations where they need to coordinate their actions. The economies of worth provides a useful lens for elucidating how strategy practitioners negotiate, justify and defend their strategic decisions in the wake of criticisms from staff, board members, analysts and other stakeholders. In particular, the economies of worth help illuminate the nuanced and often skilful ways that strategists advocate for a particular course of action or judge whether a proposed course of action is the “right” or best one to pursue given the situation at hand.
