Ethics perspective

Ignas M. Bruder

Chapter 1.10 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 42-46 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Ethics is a philosophical discipline with a rich history reaching far beyond ancient times. It gained particular prominence in ancient Greece and has been part of scholarly debates ever since. The relevance of ethics for strategy research and practice is often underscored by scholars. Strategizing can even be thought of as at least implicitly involving ethics because strategists try to come up with a “good” strategy and any distinction between good and bad involves an ethical dimension. Thus, a perspective sensitive to ethics is highly relevant for SAP research and can complement it in many ways. However, discussions of ethics in strategy research in general and SAP research in particular have been so far a niche phenomenon, despite the strong potential SAP has for contributing to a stronger integration of ethical reflection into strategy scholarship.
