Improvisation

António Abrantes and Miguel Pina e Cunha

Chapter 4.23 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 445-447 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The study of improvisation has gained popularity over the last three decades, especially as a complement to more rigid models of strategic planning. To this extent, it goes right to the core of the SAP literature since strategic conduct tends to have a strong improvisational component. Although improvisation has mostly been analysed as a response to contextual changes, it has also been approached as a strategic instrument that promotes creativity and adaptability. These two perspectives complement each other to make improvisational action an important management tool, especially in turbulent and dynamic environments where change prevails. In a world full of unpredictability, scholars of SAP may integrate improvisation as integral to strategy-making.
