Chapter 4.44 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 523-525 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Religion, with its profound and pervasive influence on societies throughout history, has remained a largely neglected phenomenon in the study of organisations and management. Despite calls for a theological turn in management research, this significant aspect of human culture and societal structure has not been adequately explored within the Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) field. The concept of lived religion, focusing on how people's religious practices influence their work and organisational life, is particularly relevant to SAP, which aims to understand the formation and enactment of strategic actions and practices within organisations. Engaging with this underexplored dimension can uncover new insights into the complex dynamics that underlie strategy practices, offering a broader lens through which to comprehend the forces that shape organisational life, and highlighting the intricate ways religious beliefs and practices inform strategic decision-making, organisational culture, and management practices.
