Strategic leadership

Shenghui Ma and Renate Kratochvil

Chapter 4.50 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 540-543 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Studying the influence of top managers—the upper echelons of an organization—on company performance has developed into a distinct research stream, known as “strategic leadership.” It focuses on how the characteristics and behaviours of strategic leaders shape strategy and impact organizations. The latter is also being of interest to Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) scholars. This entry outlines the evolution of strategic leadership research, its differences and complementarities with SAP, and proposes areas for future research. Making use of the complementarities between strategic leadership and SAP has the potential to advance our understanding of Strategic leadership as practice and to shed light on how everyday strategizing of strategic leaders connects with company performance.
