Strategy profession

Duncan Angwin

Chapter 4.59 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 575-578 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: If strategy profession is taken to mean those engaged in the work of strategy, then the origins of the strategy profession are decidedly murky. Elements of strategy have been recognised and used since humans combined intelligence, imagination, accumulated resources and coordinated behaviour to wage war. Indeed, even the term strategy has its roots in warfare with stratos meaning army spread over ground and agein meaning to lead. However, a profession needs to be based upon shared practices and these can be codified in a body of work. It is also linked to professionals possessing high levels of education and special skills and oversight from strong professional bodies. This article traces the origins of key elements of the strategy profession, to show how they have emerged and cohered over time, but also to show that a well-defined strategy profession is still work in progress.
