Chapter 4.60 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 579-580 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The term “Strategy Teams” is used to represent actors who provide expert strategy advice and support to other actors and teams. When engaging in an organization, strategy teams can either be employees of the firm (often termed as corporate or business unit strategy teams, depending on the related organizational location in the organization) or hired as consultants into the firm for a particular duration to provide support for initiatives and processes (external strategy teams). For the purposes of the current Encyclopedia entry, strategy teams are perceived as the internal teams of actors who are engaged in strategy formulation and implementation. In what follows, a perspective on the composition of strategy teams is provided, followed by an examination of how the term has been dealt with in the Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) literature and studies, and a presentation of future research potential in relation to the term.
