Chapter 4.61 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 581-582 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
All strategizing and strategy work undertaken in every organization involves the production, discussion and use of strategy texts. Strategy texts, in the way they will be explained in this entry, are constitutive elements of strategy-as-practice (SAP). Despite SAP scholars acknowledging their importance, few works center texts, more often they are assigned an epiphenomenal role, meaning they are typically seen as a by-product of strategy work, not as fundamental to its accomplishment. Strategy texts can be understood in three essential ways. First, and most commonly, the term refers to a specific document produced during strategizing, such as a strategic plan conventionally produced to present and explain an organization's or department's planned strategic activity.
