Teaching SAP

Sotirios Paroutis

Chapter 4.65 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 592-593 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry focuses on the ways contributions around teaching SAP have developed and on how future approaches in this space could develop. Taking a broader perspective, in the strategy domain, the emergence and popularity of journals such as the Academy of Management Learning & Education indicate the increasing trend among strategy scholars to focus on the content and process related to management education. Despite this attention, studies about strategy-based teaching showcase the lack of diversity in the teaching methods employed, with the case method dominating strategy teaching. However, the kinds of capabilities developed to “prepare” the classroom participants for strategy practice using the case method could potentially represent only a limited subset of the actual capabilities required in strategy practice. In this entry, I argue that SAP informed teaching has the potential to enrich teaching of strategy participants using methods and materials that are closely aligned with actual strategy practice.
