Chapter 4.66 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 594-597 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The definition of ‘technology’ can be debated. However, in SAP, we can refer broadly to a category of ‘materialities’ that enable strategy work. In this sense, strategy involves a wide variety of tools and artifacts that are—to a greater or lesser extent—technological or technology-supported. These range from computer hardware and software such as PowerPoint slideware through to digital platforms such as social media and management accounting systems, and robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Technology can also include more mundane artifacts such as whiteboards and flipcharts. Thinking of technology as a concept that can be viewed through various theoretical lenses, we highlight how it has been applied to generate insights for SAP under three categories: Technology and strategy formulation, Technology and the realization of strategy, and Technology and power in strategy.
