Chapter 4.67 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 598-600 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Conceiving strategy as a social practice, strategy as practice (SAP) is concerned with what strategy actors actually do in their everyday work related to strategy. A prominent type of strategy actors is top managers, including chief executive officers (CEOs), senior executives, and boards of directors. Residing at the strategic apex of an organization, top managers are commonly seen as the “strategists” as they are responsible for formulating organizational strategy and leading its implementation. As a result, it has received significant attention in traditional strategy research. While strategy as practice research has spanned its scope of investigation to a wide range of strategy actors, top managers have remained as a prominent subject of study. The close examination of their strategy activities has generated important insights into how top managers make strategic decisions, formulate or reshape strategic directions, and lead strategic implementation and change. In this entry, we reveal the key themes and theoretical perspectives in this stream of research and outline some promising directions for future research.
