Chapter 5.2 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 611-613 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The attention-based view (ABV) suggests that organizations and institutions should be considered as collective mechanisms for directing, regulating, and distributing attention. It builds on Herbert Simon's idea that limited managerial attention is a core antecedent of strategic conduct. Since William Ocasio's seminal piece in the Strategic Management Journal, the ABV has developed into one of the most influential meta-theories in strategy and organization research, providing a nuanced theoretical explanation of the breadth and intensity of attention allocation to particular issues and the consequences for a variety of strategic outcomes. Over the years, the approach informed research on a wide variety of topics such as strategy formation, innovation, Mergers & Acquisitions, CSR, HQ-subsidiary relationships, Open Strategy and many more.
