Chapter 5.6 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 626-629 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Although the strategy as practice (SAP) research community is increasingly employing the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and calling for more research in this area, SAP scholars have so far struggled to provide clarity around these concepts. Building a more substantial relation to the DEI literature, which has been exploring these concepts for decades, thus holds potential for advancing SAP research. Based on the DEI literature, we first provide SAP scholars with conceptual clarity around diversity, equity, and inclusion. Although these concepts are often mentioned as intricately linked, they evolved at different times and reflect different ideas and ideologies. For the SAP community, it is essential to be aware of this when integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in their research to avoid vagueness and ambiguity in their argumentation. Second, we provide an overview and critique of existing SAP studies that explicitly or implicitly deal with DEI and suggest future research opportunities.
