Institutionalism

Abstract: Institutionalism and strategy-as-practice (SAP) are well-established fields of inquiry sharing theoretical roots in practice theory and specifically the works of Bourdieu and Giddens. However, while institutionalism and SAP share common origins, the two fields can best be thought of as siblings separated at birth that have only recently reunited. They have taken distinct journeys, focused on different ends of the structure-agency spectrum and studied different levels of analysis. Recently, the wider practice turn in organizational theory has emphasized how they are complementary in forms of ‘practice-driven institutionalism’.
