Leadership-as-practice

Joseph A. Raelin

Chapter 5.10 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 642-643 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The field of leadership-as-practice (L-A-P) has evolved in parallel with strategy-as-practice and was highlighted in 2016 with an edited volume by Joseph Raelin under the title: Leadership-as-Practice: Theory and Application. Like SAP, it was formed as an alternative perspective, in its case versus standard conceptions of leadership, which relied upon the attributes of individuals and, in particular, upon the historic relationship between leaders and followers. In L-A-P, on the other hand, practice becomes the site for leadership rather than having it located in individuals and in their traits and behaviors. In particular, leadership occurs when there are turning points leading to a change in trajectory in the flow of practice accomplished by all the inter-connected parties and artefacts which come together to produce a mutual endeavour. In an L-A-P world, to find and change leadership, we must look to the practice within which it is occurring.
