Abstract: Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) was one of the most important German sociologists of the twentieth century. Being a systems theorist rather than a practice scholar, Luhmann hasn’t been an obvious source of inspiration for SAP scholarship. Nevertheless, Luhmann's work offers a range of important insights relevant to SAP scholars, which have partly found their way into SAP research already, such as the concept of episodes or the ecology of different communication systems. After all, in spite of how the relation between the two strands of theorizing is often described, systems theory and practice theory share a lot of basic assumptions – particularly their emphasis on the interpretative nature of social phenomena. Luhmann's oeuvre contains many important concepts and theoretical arguments that researchers in other fields are just starting to explore and which also could fruitfully inspire future SAP scholarship.
