Chapter 1.22 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 92-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
With their explicit focus on the social practices of which our social world is made up, practice theories offer a natural choice of perspectives for Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) scholars. Rooted in a variety of different traditions and schools of thought, practice theories constitute a broad family of theories sharing some basic assumptions but also differing in some important respects. To the extent that practice theories differ in their conceptualization of practice, practitioners and praxis, they offer different opportunities for SAP scholars to address the various aspects of strategy and strategizing. In the following we will discuss the commonalities and differences between the practice theories in turn.
