Boundary objects

Chapter 2.6 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 128-131 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Boundary object refers to a concept providing the basis to investigate how objects, such as strategy tools, shape strategizing. The concept provided a conceptual basis to shift debates beyond strategy tools’ functional properties. Yet, not every strategy tool or artifact may serve as boundary object. Artifacts become boundary objects if they are meaningfully and usefully incorporated into the practices of actors working in diverse fields (Spee & Jarzabkowski 2009). This entry discusses the origins of the concept, its introduction to strategy-as-practice, its application and opportunities for further application and contribution to advance theory.
