Identity

David Oliver

Chapter 2.13 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 154-157 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Our identities, by informing the way we see ourselves and others, drive many of our actions, decisions and practices. The frame of reference provided by identity guides the way we make sense of ourselves and others, facilitating effective relationships. This entry describes identity as a multi-level concept that can inspire theorising by SAP scholars interested in individual, group or organisation-level strategic phenomena. Particularly at the organisational level, identity work and identification perspectives can shed valuable light on strategy processes and practices. It also proposes future research into the co-constitutive nature of identity and strategy, and the impact of cross-level identity dynamics on strategy over time.
