Performativity

Chapter 2.24 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 194-198 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry sets out to examine the performativity of strategic discourses and practices. It begins by defining performativity, before looking closely at how this concept is used in strategic management and how Strategy-as-Practice researchers have applied it in their research. In general terms, applied to the field of strategy, the concept of performativity demands that we study the power effects of strategy. More specifically, it invites us to investigate whether and how strategy discourses and practices contribute to the making of strategy. A performative approach introduces distinct conceptual elements and theoretical instruments, enabling Strategy-as-Practice researchers to gain a more nuanced understanding of the phenomenon. Furthermore, the performative approach encourages a comprehensive examination of the conditions that facilitate this performativity.
