Practical consciousness

Haridimos Tsoukas

Chapter 2.27 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 208-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Whatever strategic management is, it is certainly practical – getting things done. When a senior manager draws a heated strategy discussion to a final decision, they show practical consciousness. When a consultant sees the opportunity to pitch a strategy idea to a client, they show practical consciousness. When a junior manager finds the right formula for selling a strategic issue to senior management, they show practical consciousness. Practical consciousness is essential to strategy work, as it is to our lives in general. Whatever involves action is practical.
