Praxis

Charlotte Cloutier and Alana Pierce

Chapter 2.31 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 225-229 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Praxis is a fundamental concept in philosophy that generally refers to the relationship between knowledge understood in abstract terms (e.g., thinking, knowing) and its application in concrete, real-world settings (e.g., doing, acting). Its focus is to understand and explain human action: when how and why people do what they do. The concept of praxis has been taken up by scholars in various domains, most notably in education and sociology. In education, its focus is on how humans translate theory into practice: how they learn to apply acquired knowledge. In sociology, and relatedly in SAP, its focus is more on how social structures interact with human agency to shape action (or activity) occurring in specific contexts and at specific moments in time.
