Reflexivity

Paul Hibbert

Chapter 2.34 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 239-242 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The term reflexivity describes both a recursive process of adaptation in response to events, in which the adaptation leads to different responses in the future, and an awareness of how an individual's positionality is constructed in this way. However, different theorists situate reflexivity either as a property of structures or as a capacity of individuals and thus may separate or combine these two aspects. The treatment offered here follows Archer and many others in rooting reflexivity in the context of how people demonstrate and apply a capacity for adaptation in everyday life in ways that can be revealed through introspection. This focus is consistent with recent attention to reflexivity in the sociological, organisational and methodological literatures that will be of interest to strategy as practice (SAP) scholars, particularly those seeking to develop a more reflexive understanding of practitioners.
