Space

Chapter 2.39 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 257-260 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Strategizing always occurs in space, such as a boardroom or corridor, a meeting or workshop space – whether in-person, virtual or hybrid. From the perspective of Strategy as Practice, the notion of space captures this ‘where’ of strategizing. Concurring with the practice turn at the beginnings of Strategy as Practice, a ‘spatial turn’ has taken place in the field of organization studies. Interested in the role of space in organizing, it posits that space is not merely a passive backdrop to organizational activities like strategizing, but actively shapes these activities, while also being shaped by them. This implies that every strategizing activity and practice affects the space in which it unfolds and that that space also affects the strategizing activity and practice. While most studies on Strategy as Practice have disregarded space as mere context, the studies outlined in this entry and the spatial turn in organization studies more generally suggest that space is relevant for strategizing and hence deserves explicit research attention.
